Does size matter: yes surly it does!
Moving goods around Edinburgh over the past 6 years it’s become a bit of a mind game trying to gather correct information for giving an accurate removal quote, one issue seems to the actual size of the goods involved. For example a simple thing like a sofa, is it a 2 seated or 3 seated or better still a heavy metal sofa bed or even better still a Massive corner sofa in 4/6 parts which when asking for a quote doesn’t seem to be relevant to the customer to mention this unless the right questions are asked.
Wardrobes: Single, triple, IKEA light as the come or an huge antique triple French art deco that comes in various parts and weights a ton, taking up a whole loading space in a standard panel van. Or a 4 door, 2.5 meters high mirrored door IKEA job that need to be completely dismantled into 20 parts that still has all the screws sticking out of it so making it hard to pack safely in the van, to top it all coming out a top floor flat.
Chest of drawers: Argos/IKEA classic light as a feather, double width solid oak or massive tall boy or a scotch chest. It goes from one extreme to the other but all relevant to pricing of the job!
Beds single/double/bunk/super king, bog standard mattress and divan, pine/wood bed that’s in 8-10 parts or the crème de la crème solid wood sleigh bed with those screws that can only be turned with a tool like a dart and takes forever to dismantle and reassemble. it never occurs to customers to think about the issues of multi-part items being loaded. when its assumed its a standard bed of 2 boxes and a mattress.
Dining table: 2 chairs to 12 chairs, solid plastic fold away or a huge wood antique banquet style or better still an 8ft glass extendable table that has 2 layers of glass hence increasing its weight massively. Please be as accurate as possible with descriptions !
Fish tanks: is it a little won at the fair style glass bowl or a 500 litre monster just like this one in picture . Luckily we had two on hand to move this ”it might take two men to move”
from East Lothian aquatics. Make sure tanks have most of the water out as this adds 1kg per liter to the weight. Don’t think because its the removal men they have super strength.
The Garden table and chairs : in the picture is 4 meters long same with bench. If a man with a van had turned up in a transit van this could not have been moved. The size was not mentioned even though this was a custom made item and an unusual size.
If you live in a flat in Gorgie or Leith you’re more likely have the smaller style items of furniture but if you live in a flat in Edinburgh new town or a house in an upmarket area all those things triple in size and weight.
How its moved and packed in removal van could mean more time on a job affecting the price to make sure its moved safely. So please remember to think what it is, how it will be moved . When a guys says £30 to move it and it sounds cheap this price will increase to the same as that other more expensive quote you had , but only after mentioning what it actually is !
Does it make a different to price , yes!
