I get around 50-60 enquires a year for personal self storage, I cant always help but try and put customers in the right direction. In the past 6 months I’ve been going to Big yellow in Edinburgh just off Calder road. My first impression was how clean/ new it looked.. shame not everything was up to scratch from this modern secure storage. Being a removals guy  I sometimes get the cold shoulder from certain types of people, that’s OK ..I don’t care, that’s there problem- not mine. When you are in a Self storage place I’m used to being shown the storage unit with the customer to make sure its suitable for the volume, then being left to pack the storage unit so customer can deal with the self storage contract for whatever size is agreed that normally takes 5/10 mins. Being ignored is rude… being treated like you don’t matter is rude, that’s how I felt on 3 occasions visiting this big yellow facility by this staff member. Oddly one of my customers said how this person came across to us - so its not just me !

I told the ”lady” my issues and what i thought was wrong, being rude not showing us the storage unit on arrival  and not doing this and leaving us standing waiting was unprofessional. She was quite unpleasant in her response.. trying the old its MY fault route she was very busy and that was that.. but I kept my cool and told her I was going to complain to her manager ,who apparently had just left the company, even though her reply was feeble/ child-like.. matching her (he might just complain) excuse when she apologised to me when I was leaving (a relatives death) but doesnt add up as she is like that all the other times ive been here. I don’t like this place because of her…it wasn’t busy when we arrived we were the only people there - she was just being very ignorant. I bet if I was one of the cliques that are regulars here she would have bent over backwards to make sure I wasnt waiting over 10 mins.

Big yellow- big put off!

I’ve noticed on a National Business for sale site someone offering franchises for £8000 to be part of a so called successful Dan the man with a van (who?) if you look you will find one guy doing this down south and its not a success, well certainly not they way he’s suggested…. he’s trying to dupe people/mugs into paying him money for nothing, you would be better spending that cash on your own common sense – not on that idiot  lining his pockets… if he was national and eveyone knew his name (cheers) – yeah a little maybe, but not this bloke.

I also noticed someone up north suggesting they have a successful business formula and are expanding into franchise – well let me advise you the easiest way to find removals work without the hassle of  websites/ads/ all the other costly expense involved if you are legititmate is to subscribe to removal quote sites that offer you customer leads for a price. They advertise on Google adwords / national press for a ONE STOP shop  for movers looking for a quote. Normally costing £50-150 a month depending on how busy it is and how good they are at advertising, best stick with the bigger compaines – not those other wee shady scams  – this is their so called successful formula subscribing to those sites and deciding they are a success, yes thats hard work isnt it ! Don’t be duped by  grant Bovey types of the removals world,  the classic confidence trickster!

I’ve been searching for a decent garage in Edinburgh since my mechanic left to go back to New Zealand 6 months ago and it’s been a struggle, you know you take the vehicle/van along to a garage looking for a solution to the problem and all they do is create costly problems and youre doubtful its work that actually needs done. Well 2 weeks ago I found this garage in west shore road just of Granton square along from pickfords storage depot – I’ve passed it many times you cant miss them its got about 30 odd cars parked over a few 100 yards. They rent the Garage space from clockwork and you will see there sign close to the garage.

Id had some service advisory on my larger Luton Moving van by another mechanic who I found on Edinburgh Guntree but this mechanic dismissed what ive been told that need repaired after looking at van. I got new disks/ pads and replacement bushes all for just over £100! Steering was making a strange noise when I was turning corners it was the worn brake disk, he could have said I needed the new ball joint and disks but he didnt –  all work on the same day, and the van goes like a dream and I can carry on doing removals without any issues.

My other small removal van I took it in yesterday for a full service - all oil/filters and a  once over, The power steering had issues and was sorted out all for £100! My last service and some work cost way more than that and it took 3 days to get the van back as the garage couldn’t source parts. I think is a not bad price for a full van service and some work and not feeling like you have been robbed!

Id recommend TK garage to anyone… although there is one small problem they only seem to speak polish !! but its all good humour and they seem very honest so if you can get past the language barrier (some english is spoken and normally covered by showing you parts or hand gestures)

It seems popular with Local poles and what I gather the poles do like a bargain !!!

BIG-HEARTED Glasgow builders are jetting out to South Africa today to build homes for poor villagers.
The men from property firm Elphinstone will spend 10 days building houses in a shanty town in Cape Town.
They are part of a charity project which will see 150 workers from all over the UK fly thousands of miles to build watertight homes to replace shacks.
Elphinstone Group chief executive Ken Ross, who has promised to roll up his sleeves and work as a labourer, and project manager Leslie Baird will be accompanying four tradesmen

Thanks so much for that and we are due a further visit from the NHBC to check on Elphinstone later this month.

I do wish that there was some legal protection for new home buyers as due to Elphinstone’s shoddy work we are unable to get
a floor down or sell the place 17 months after we paid for this place. Also if the works had been completed speedily then we may have been able to sell before the collapse of the housing market, so again Elphinstone have caused even more disruption and costs to us by their negligence.

The chairman’s lack of response is very very disappointing but not surprising as it backs up what a disreputable company Elphistone are. It also
confirms that their hollow promises mean nothing. They cannot even make an effort for our MP which speaks volumes about their attitude. If the
man at the top, Ken Ross, cannot even keep his promises it doesn’t say much for the rest of the workforce or the company. However we are already
aware of their abysmal reputation and now we know that it comes from top downwards.

Lots of companies have sounds bites like` innovators in property` and all the bumph that goes with it ,one such is Elphinstone homes based in Glasgow who are currently building on the flood plains off Doonfoot road in Ayr, its called THE MANSIONS AT CUNNING PARK & my dealings so far with them as well as other NEW HOME BUYERS isn’t that great in fact Ive never come across such an unprofessional bordering on SHAMBLES company who seem to be a bit like Gordon brown is at the moment going round in circles flailing about not accepting any blame on any front .

I had an email from someone IN AYR wondering how planning was given and claimed it was originally rejected due to it being a flood plain but im not clear on that point, but it does seem on it’s a nice spot , very uneven hilly ground like a nature reserve leading down to the sea ,I just hope ELPHINSTONE get the drainage right for that as it could be a bit of a disaster if flooding occurs ( BEING A FLOOD PLAIN ) especially as the ELPHINSTONE HOMES DEVELOPMENT cost so much £500-1.5 million not cheap for an unexpected & unwanted indoor bath Or unexpected water feature running through the garage or living room .

If you have that sort of money to buy something like the MANSIONS AT CUNNING PARK AYR good luck to you and I hope you have better luck than the 70+ owners I know about including me , maybe you should look into things before a new home purchase don’t listen hot air sales hype, this is a big investment and could cost you a lot in health and money and how you see things , the laws should be changed to give new buyers some rights as currently those types of builders/ developers get away with it – well the ones who try , I dont want to accuse all developers as some will actually care about the product that is provided !!

All I can say is buyer beware Elphinstone homes in Ayr
